Show-Me Hope??
Is there hope for meaningful ethics reform this year in Jefferson City? Amid the constant ethical lapses, there are blossoming some solid attempts at cleansing the capitol. Jake Zimmerman (D-83) is sponsor of HB1727. If passed, this bill will take some significant steps toward reforming lobbying and campaign activities.
I urge everyone to read the bill (or, at least, the summary)! Zimmerman’s bill would represent a significant leap toward real reform. It not only restores individual campaign donation limits but addresses the scandalous (and at times incestuous) relationships that exist between legislators, their staff, and professional lobbyists.
I’m optimistic. Does that make me naïve? Yeah, probably. But given that the FBI is still lurking around the capitol – presumably looking for its next ethically challenged faux-statesman (see Jeff Smith, Steve Brown, Rod Jetton, Talibdin El-Amin, etc. etc. etc……) – it just might be the perfect time for significant ethics reform to accidently ooze out of Jefferson City. And the fact that many of these legislators are about to be term-limited out adds to the bill’s probability of success. Might as well go out on an ethical high note, right?
Of course, it doesn’t help matters that this bill is getting absolutely NO NEWS COVERAGE! I guess that really shouldn’t surprise anyone. Missourians have become so jaded they no longer care about anything evenly remotely looking like statesmanship that comes out of Jefferson City. So unless it involves a DUI arrest or domestic violence, there’s really no incentive for the press to give it any attention.
