Cajun Calamity: Louisiana Has Stronger Ethics Than Missouri. Be Afraid. Be Very Afraid.

Turn out the lights.  Close up shop.  Missouri has officially hit rock bottom.  Missouri currently has NO limits on lobbyist gift-giving.  Evidently Missouri lawmakers don’t see a problem.  Even Louisiana sees a problem.  Louisiana.  The one in the United States.  Yes, THAT Louisiana.

Louisiana law states:

“No public servant shall solicit or accept, directly or indirectly, any thing of economic value as a gift or gratuity from any person or from any officer, director, agent, or employee of such person, if such public servant knows or reasonably should know that such person: (1) Has or is seeking to obtain contractual or other business or financial relationships with the public servant’s agency, or (2) Is seeking, for compensation, to influence the passage or defeat of legislation by the public servant’s agency.”

Louisiana is known for many wonderful things.  Incredible music, great food.  But ethical political behavior never usually enjoys company with the word “Louisiana.”

There are a lot of corrupt practices in the state.  Yet even Louisiana sees the need to disconnect public servants from the gift-giving industrial complex that naturally develops when lobbyists enter the state capitol.

Even the “Sodom and Gomorrah of the Mississip” realizes that allowing lobbyists to shower lawmakers with unlimited gifts is unethical.  Even Louisiana……..

When will Missouri?

Support the Missouri Gift-Ban Pledge and legislation regulating lobbyist gift-giving.
